Seeing Is Believing
We are staring down the ending of Long John at this point. We’ve got about a month to go (three pages a week), but from this point on it’s nothing but the end game as we resolve a few hanging threads and ultimately let Long John Walker go.
People have been asking what comes next after Long John, and even now I still haven’t decided on the project. I do know I’m not going to jump into a long story quite yet; instead, I’m going to focus on shorter, one-shot, self-contained stories with the hope that I can get more books out faster and have more to offer people at the store and when I table at shows. But this is it for Long John and westerns as far as I’m concerned. Anything that comes next will be completely unrelated. Mostly that’s due to not wanting to be typecast but also because I don’t really have another western in me.
I’ve said it before, Long John is a western inasmuch as it takes place in the United States during the 1880s; I didn’t do this because I’m a lifelong fan of westerns and love the genre. Long John was informed more by the history of the region than knowledge of the genre, and I have other stories with other characters taking place in other times that I am looking forward to tell.
