Either Side of the Edge
This page was another milestone in that the panel where we see Long John’s reflection in Hellrider Jackie’s blade has been an image I’ve had in mind for a very long time. At times subtle, at other times heavy-handed, the Long John/Hellrider juxtaposition is a central idea throughout the book (among others; I really don’t want to tell people what the comic “means”), and this moment was something I really wanted to build to. Coincidentally, panel 4 is strikingly similar to a Sketch Friday I did years ago honoring the memory of the recently deceased Stan Lee. That wasn’t intentional, though it stood out after I removed the gregarious blood effects I had planned to put in that panel (as evidenced by the thumbnail below). It kind of felt right, and I was all right with that.
